After ruthlessly demolishing the struggling Thika Rovers 3-1 last weekend, Multimedia University hockey boys are set to prove that they are among the 2012 national league title challengers when they face Kenya Polytechnic next weekend but one.
The hockey boys are now on the top of the league with nine points and are ready to prove that the stellar display was not a one off.
“We are set for more wins. The morale is very high among the players and there is no room for complacency†said the hockey captain Adoiwa Kelly.
Kelly says that just like their ladies counter parts that brought the trophy home when they emerged third best in the world women day tournament, their eyes are set on the big prize and there is no turning back.
They play makers and scores who propelled the team against Thika Rovers are Jared Kongini who gave the team their first win, Shamil Saul second before Jeff Asira had the last laugh to seal off the game.
The MMU hockey team coach George Jalango noted that they have had a very encouraging debut in the league and that the zeal and zest in which the players are performing in is a clear signal that good fortunes in the pipeline.
“We have to maintain and carry on with the winning mentality. Every match is important to us and our strategy is not to drop any point,†asserts Jalango.
However, the ladies hockey team is set to face a stern test when they will kick off their league this weekend by taking on their arch-rivals Kenyatta University.
“I think the overall goal for all the teams in all matches are to start the league on a winning note and we’ve been training hard for the last one and a half month and we are ready to start our campaign seeking to bring the trophy home,†Says Lydia Syphrose the ladies captain.
Jalango even though noting that the battle will be tough, express optimism and confidence that they intent to do well on their first appearance in the national league.
