INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS PERMANENT SECRETARY, DR BITANGE NDEMO MAKES KEYNOTE ADDRESS TO STAFF AND STUDENTS OF Multimedia University of Kenya
Â
Multimedia University of Kenya staff and students were privileged to host the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Bitange Ndemo when he visited on 15th May, 2012 and gave them a key note address at the MMU Conference Hall.
Â
The PS was welcomed and shown round the campus by the College’s Principal, Prof Walter O. Oyawa and the Deputy Principal, Academic Affairs, Prof Charles Njoroge. He visited the MMU 99.9 FM studio, the proposed MMU TV station which are both fully operated by the students of the Faculty of Media and Communication and the ICT museum, where he was taken down memory lane, seeing how ICT made its way into our world. He also visited our newly inaugurated state-of-the art Kenya-Korean Information Access Centre and witnessed e-learning taking place in real time.
Â
A very impressed Dr. Bitange saw opportunities every where he looked and urged the students to take advantage of the top notch facilities and not to let them go to waste like so many students have done in the past. He congratulated the University College for the launch of its Information Access Centre and the Strategic plan, Master plan, Service Charter and Paperless Initiative, saying that with the facilities MMU has, it is well on its way to achieving its vision of being an ICT Centre of Excellence.
Â
“The ICT sector will transform Kenya into a knowledge driven economy with more jobs available for youths,†Dr Ndemo informed the audience of students and staff at MMU at the MMU Conference Hall.
Â
In his speech, Dr. Ndemo challenged our students to be critical and creative thinkers and to spend their spare time in the facilities searching for innovative ways to assist and progress Kenya instead of wasting time engaging in activities like drinking. This is a point our Deputy Principal, Academic Affairs, Prof. Njoroge emphasized by telling the students that if they must indeed drink, they should throw ideas off each other over a drink.
Â
“Funding is not a problem but anyone who uses lack of funding as a reason for lack of achievement is just looking for an excuse,†said Dr. Ndemo when asked about possible funding by a student. He did, however, tell them to call him when they have a viable idea and he will be more than happy to buy them lunch as they discuss a bright future.
Â
The Principal, Prof. Walter. O. Oyawa, reiterated the point that the University College is positioning itself to be the ICT hub globally, a dream we get closer to achieving with the launch of our Strategic Plan and Master Plan.
