MMU Journalism Club

The club was founded in 2007 by the second year Media Students of that time. The idea was initiated by 10 friends who thought it would be a viable idea to occupy their time and improve their writing capabilities.

The biggest challenge was the criteria they would use to recruit new members since the College’s population was big. They started by recruiting two representatives per class who would attend meetings, collect articles from their classes and be spokes persons of the club. Later they left the recruitment open to anyone with a desire to join the club irrespective of their course.

Initially there were 36 members, thus the club went out to look for a Patron to assist in fulfilling the activities of the club. The first patron was Mr. Isaac Mutwiri (Dean Faculty of Media & Communicatio).

Their main objective was to produce a college magazine in which their writing talents would be explored. Names for the magazines were proposed and they included: Oracle, Torch, and Pinnacle. It was decided that they rest on Oracle because it’s a simple and lucrative name that sells without much ado.

Their first edition of the Oracle magazine was a black and white publication done within the college. Having seen that the idea was viable they went forth to their second edition which was beautifully done outside the college with the members being the designers.

Various amendments were made concerning the magazine such as; how to send the articles, one could send the article to the club through the internet or hand written to the officials.

The magazine was to be published once a semester. An editorial board was said to be elected carefully for quality subbing of stories.
The first Chairman was Ramadhan Rajab, a young talent endowed with writing prowess and interviewing skills.

After his departure, the Club was left into the hands of a “Fresha” by then to mould the club to what it is today. Rawlings Otieno became the second Chairperson of the Club during which the third Edition of the Oracle Magazine was produced.
