MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF KENYA LAUNCHES FUTURISTIC AND HI TECH MASTERPLAN, STRATEGIC PLAN, SERVICE CHARTER AND PAPERLESS INITIATIVE

It was pomp and color as Multimedia University of Kenya launched its futuristic and hi tech Master Plan, Strategic Plan,  Service Charter and Paperless Initiative on Friday 11th May, 2012.

The occasion was graced by none other than Bob Collymore, the CEO of Safaricom, a company that transfers more money than the entire economy of Malaysia.

"We have in our budget partnership plans to boost and enhance development and industrialization through research, innovation and technological development and commercialization in the area of information. And for our kind of business, universities are a rich resource of talents that will yield game changing technologies in future, " said Bob Collymore, during the launch.

The Strategic Plan defines the vision, mission and objectives that the Multimedia University of Kenya desires to pursue in the next five years and the Master Plan defines the projected and scheduled projects, their location, as well as activities in the long run. The launch of these two documents is an important milestone towards the realization of MMU’s vision as an ICT and Multimedia Centre of excellence globally.

The Service Charter reflects our commitment to our clients and stakeholders, how we intend to serve them and what they can expect of us when we interact with them. The Service Charter is in line with our Strategic Plan and forms the basis for evaluating and reporting our performance as we inculcate professionalism and excellence in Service Delivery. It is therefore an important instrument in promoting high standards of Service Delivery as we focus on all our clients’ needs.

The Paperless Initiative we launched through e-learning and video conferencing at the Kenya-Korea Information Access Centre is a testimony of where MMU is headed and a demonstration of the commitment of its leadership to reach greater heights in excellence as a global hub of multimedia and ICT technologies.

Hon Mutahi Kagwe, the Chairman of the MMU Council, said the institution is positioning itself for the great challenge of building an information society as captured in the country’s Vision 2030.

‘’ A fundamental thread that runs through Vision 2030 is the desire for Kenya to ultimately become a knowledge-based economy. In such an economy, technology, knowledge and skills play a critical role in economic growth and competitiveness than other factors of production such as labour, capital and natural resources.

We are focused on ICT as the driver of our academic programmes and as a cross-cutting theme in all our research and technological innovations, ‘’ he said, adding that students at MMU will benefit from an exchange programme with Asian and the European universities aimed at strengthening ties and sharing expertise as well as equipment.

Besides being an ICT hub, Multimedia University of Kenya has extensively embraced current technology trends with a view to providing quality education through the use of advanced technology in service delivery.

MMU is among the first constituent colleges of public universities to integrate the use of video conferencing in their teaching. With the launch of the paperless initiative, MMU is ultimately going to lower the cost of education in the country through e-learning and video conferencing.
