Despite being rumbled 47-7 by Nondies in a hard-fought match played at JKUAT Karen on Saturday, the MMU Rugby ‘The Hawks’ proved to be a stronger team among equals.

Nondies which is one of the professional teams in Kenya got a taste of ‘The Hawks’ of MMU on the ongoing Franchise Cup dubbed ‘The Chairman Cup’ in a tight game that was characterized by poor handling, especially  under high ball and unnecessary penalties which were unfortunately not capitalized upon by kickers on both sides.

Nevertheless, MMU rugby captain Remmington Washialu said that it was as good improvement as compared to the way they played with Nakuru last weekend where they were beaten 96-0.

“This has given us a psychological motivation since we were able to net in seven goals against Nondies which a highly respected team in the country for their outstanding performance,” said Remmintong.

The ‘Hawks’ who are making their first appearance into the league are keen to gain more experience by playing the top most professional teams that are participating in the Franchise Cup like the Nondies, Nakuru among others.

“We might be beaten by these teams but the most important thing for us is to get exposed and gain that experience that will see us become one of the strongest teams in the country,” observes Remmington.

They vowed to continue with their training adding that they will not be discouraged by the two consecutive loses but are focused in doing their best in the fixtures which is yet to be confirmed in the course of the week.

MMU hockey ladies ‘The Ravens’ had a demoralizing start into the ongoing national league when they sunk down to ‘Titanic’ of Kenyatta University by 5-0 at City Park  Stadium on  Saturday.

The Ravens who are making their first appearance into the league put up a frantic fight against their arch-rivals KU but the ‘Titanic’ took the lead after 16 minutes in the first half by Grace Moraa giving her team their first goal.

The second half saw the Ravens being humiliated more by the Titanic in match that was also attended by MMU Hockey patron Mr. Tom Oundo who saw his ladies going through the cruel axing.

The Titanic went on their full scoring spree when they netted all the remaining three goals in a span of 25 minutes with Grace who scored the first goal giving her team the third goal while the fourth and fifth goal all came from Nana Baraza.

The KU hockey coach Dminic Mutwol praised his team for the good start and vowed to train more on fitness adding that physical fitness was not to the required standard in all the teams.

But MMU hockey coach George Jalango blamed the referees of the game for the lose terming their professional credibility as ‘wanting’.

“A lot of errors occurred in the field but the referees were not doing their jobs. Very many fouls were committed by KU players but all these were ignored,” Laments Jalango.

However, Jalango has warned his opponents to expect a different game vowing they will bounce back and win.

“We must put what has happened behind us and I dare say that we deserve better than what we got at City Park,” says Jalango.

“Even though we lost, I still believe that we deserve more from the weekend fixture. We played better, created more chances and it left us bitter that we could not have done better than this,” observes Jalango.

Jalango also challenged the hockey management to get qualified referees who will do their work without fear or favor if all teams are to be treated fairly in the pitch.

Meanwhile, MMU hockey boys who floored Thika Rovers last weekend but one 3-0 will take on Kenya Polytechnic this weekend with a winning mentality to continue being at the top of the league table.

They boys, who are now leading with clear nine points, will be keen to bring back home the three points which will see them still going unbeaten with 12 points.
