BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology awarded by University of Greenwich
Overview
This programme aims to produce graduates who are empowered with the skills and knowledge sought by employers in today’s competitive markets.
The programme covers the theory, practice and application of information technology (IT) in a modern business environment. The programme addresses contemporary issues in a range of subjects and the social implications of the development of computer systems. The programme develops the lifelong learning skills that are essential for IT professionals to ensure that their knowledge and skills are current.
The programme acts as the 3rd year of the NCC Education Degree Journey, building on the knowledge and skills introduced by the International Diploma in Computer Studies (IDCS) and the International Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies (IADCS), resulting in an honours degree awarded by the University of Greenwich.
Programme Structure
The programme is made up of six 15-credit modules, each of which requires an average of 150 hours of study, around 40 of which are based in the classroom and a 30-credit Project module in which the student conducts a piece of independent work resulting in a substantial written report.
*Database Design and Implementation – provides the skills and knowledge needed by an effective database developer. The module covers a range of modelling and development techniques required to develop databases; it also considers the role of databases systems within an organisation and future database applications.
*eCommerce – addresses the underlying business paradigms, practices and processes associated with conducting business on the World Wide Web. It considers the development of systems that can be trusted by customers, business partners and regulatory bodies.
*Information Systems Engineering – considers how development methodologies support the development of high quality information systems deployed by organisations.
*Information Systems Management – considers how information systems can be managed to effectively support the various functions of an organisation.
*IT Project and Quality Management – provides the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required by an IT professional to effectively manage and quality assure IT projects in industry.
*Rapid Application Development – considers how modern software engineering techniques can be used to develop computer systems that meet the needs of end users.
*Project – allows a student to demonstrate his/her ability to conduct a significant piece of research and development work which results in a substantial report. The skills developed will be of considerable use in a student’s future career and are essential for postgraduate study.
Assessment
With the exception of the Project module, modules are assessed by a written examination, which accounts for 70% of the module’s mark, and a coursework assignment, which make up the remaining 30% of the module’s mark. The Project module is assessed by a project report and the quality of processes followed by the student.
Award

About the University of Greenwich
The university traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country’s first part-time day-release and sandwich courses. Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it the diverse strengths it has today in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970 and university status awarded in 1992.
The University works closely with a number of colleges, both in the local region and internationally. For the University of Greenwich the rationale and purpose for developing collaborative provision lies in the fact that such academic partnerships serve to meet demand for higher education at a local, regional, national and international level. The University aims to support growth in educational provision in the area served by the partner and thereby help to meet identified skills shortages and needs of industry. Partnerships are seen as important ways in which the University can develop academic progression routes to degree programmes, potentially to stimulate research and consultancy activities between staff, share effective practices and in general broaden the experience and horizons of both students and staff.
