Varsity celebrates 2nd graduation ceremony

Multimedia University of Kenya celebrated its second graduation ceremony by conferring degrees and awarding diplomas to over one thousands graduates in respective disciplines at the institution’s Main Campus on Friday, 23rd October 2015.

During the colorful ceremony that drew thousands in attendance from across the regional divide, MMU honoured Kenya’s Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Mr. Joseph Kinyua with an honorary degree.

Mr. Kinyua was the first graduand during the ceremony and was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration (Honoris Causa) for his outstanding depth and breadth of service to society, his selfless determination and passion that has immeasurably transformed the lives of many Kenyans.

Speaking during the ceremony, MMU Chancellor, Hon. Catherine Kimura lauded the university management under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor Amb. Prof. Festus Kaberia for the numerous transformative developments and steady growth the institution has realized over the last two years.

She said that the university will remain committed to offering quality education that is relevant to the development and industrial needs of Kenya, urging the graduates to build on the knowledge and skills gained to contribute towards the realization of Kenya’s Vision 2030.

In her remarks, Principal Secretary (PS), State Department of Science and Technology, Prof. Collette Suda, challenged universities to continuously review their academic programmes to fill the skills gap in the market.

She congratulated MMU for offering quality programmes that are relevant to the everyday societal challenges, and urged the institution to continue creating strategic linkages with industry players and to forge private-public partnerships that support academic growth.

The PS encouraged the graduands to take the responsibility of creating different and sustainable innovations that will drive the nation to higher levels of development. She was speaking on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi.

In his address during the ceremony, the Chairman of Council Dr. Herbert Amatsimbi reiterated the Council’s commitment to ensuring that the university realizes its strategic goals that include expansion and diversification of academic programmes and the improvement of infrastructure for quality training.

Grad 1In the same breath, Vice Chancellor Amb. Prof. Festus Kaberia outlined various initiatives and developments MMU has undertaken in the last two years, singling out those aimed at boosting capacity for the university’s research, learning and development agendas.  He pointed out that the university has established the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies and consequently plans to launch Masters and PHD programmes next year.


The VC urged the graduands to take advantage of the quality training and effective mentorship they have acquired at MMU to effect change and development in the country.

In addition, he thanked all stakeholders, University Council, University Management, staff, students and the student leadership for their support and for creating an enabling environment for the growth of MMU.
