Pursue professional courses, varsity students urged

 
University Students have been urged to pursue professional courses alongside their degree programmes to gain a competitive edge in the current job market.
 
 
Speaking at Multimedia University of Kenya during a Career Fair, CEO, Pan African Skills and Consulting Ltd, Mr. Elijah Mogere called upon the students to take professional courses alongside their degree programmes saying that the courses will enable them acquire necessary skills required in the job market.
 
 
He said that the job industry has become too competitive with limited job opportunities and therefore calls for additional skills among job seekers.
 
 
“A degree alone is not enough. It is important to undertake professional courses that will give you additional skills in line with your area of specialization” said Mogere.
 
 
He challenged the students to view themselves as products in supermarket, and therefore position themselves by taking courses with unique skills that will make them stand out in the crowded job market.
 
 
In the same breath, Deputy Principal, College of Human Resource Management (CHRM), Mr. James Wanyama, emphasized the importance of undertaking professional courses saying that having additional professional skills will ensure soft landing in the job industry.
 
 
In his remarks, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation, Prof. Paul Mbatia, said that the primary purpose of a degree is to make one knowledgeable and be able to transform the society.  
 
 
Prof. Mbatia at the same time urged students to focus on their studies and acquire as much skills as possible to make them realize their career dreams.
 
 
The Career Fair, themed ‘Positioning yourself in the Job Market in the 21st Century’, was organized by the Faculty of Business and Economics, and attended by industry leaders, university alumni and exhibitors from leading organizations.
 
 
The event was held on 19th April 2017 at the MMU Main Conference Hall.
