MMU’s Dr. Wilson Ugangu has been elected President of the East Africa Communication Association (EACA), a regional body that provides a platform for media and communication researchers, scholars, academicians, policy makers and regulators in the region and beyond, to share their research findings in these fields.

Dr. Ugangu, who is also Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean at the Faculty of Media and Communication, was elected during the association’s 2018 Conference held in Light University of Bujumbura, Burundi.

He was the Deputy President of the Association and now takes over the presidency from Dr. Monica Chibita of Uganda Christian University who has retired after the end of her two-year term.

According to Dr. Ugangu, the association has pioneered research in emerging areas of communication and offered support and expert advice to universities, media and communication departments in the region.

Dr. Ugangu aspires to guide the Association’s growth in membership so as to provide a platform for media scholars to contribute to the wider pool of global knowledge.

“Currently, the member countries include Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya and we hope to grow membership by attracting institutional, professional and student membership from across all the East Africa nations,” said Ugangu adding that a wider pool of members will serve to increase the networking, learning opportunities and bringing different perspectives on emerging and current trends in the field.

The Don also reveals that he was part of a team of scholars who founded the association in 2010, with an aim of providing an open space which promotes academic scholarship and mentorship.

During the conference, Dr. Ugangu also presented a paper titles Kenya’s media sphere, change and role in political communication which is based on the Kenya’s 2017 Presidential Election and highlights the shift in political communication in the country.
