Russia ambassador to Kenya pays courtesy call to the VC

Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Kenya Mr. Dmitry Maksimychev on Thursday, July 4th, 2019, paid a courtesy call to the Multimedia University of Kenya’ s Vice Chancellor.

Amb. Maksimychev visited at a time MMU and People’s Friendships University of Russian (PFUR) are implementing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that offers scholarship opportunities to Kenyan students at post graduate and undergraduate levels.

He said that Russia and Kenya will continue to work together to promote access to education through such partnerships that seek to create more study opportunities for the Kenyan students.

The Ambassador who was also accompanied by Russia Embassy, Head of Protocol Ms. Maria Bacherikova, RUDN University, Head of the Office for European and America Countries Anastasia Gurova and RUDN University Specialist of Alumni Department Pavel Mukhachev, presided over the official opening of the 2019 Olympiad Scholarship- Mathematics and Physics Tests.

In his remarks, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation Prof. Paul Mbatia, who was representing MMU Vice Chancellor Amb. Prof. Festus Kaberia, thanked PFUR for the scholarship opportunities to the Kenyan students, saying the country continues to benefit from such partnerships by getting specialized skilled personnel in science and engineering fields.

His sentiments were echoed by Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology Prof. Abel Mayaka who said the MoU has special reference to the cultural, economic, political and social implications of contemporary research at both the local and global context.

Prof. Mayaka also thanked PFUR for their commitment in implementing the MoU but noted that there is need to explore other partnership areas like exchange of academic staff and joint research and projects that can generate funds.

He revealed that the number of Olympiad participants has been on the rise to about 70 in 2019 from 30 in 2015 adding that there is need to increase the number of scholarship opportunities to meet the high demand for higher education by Kenyan students especially in the areas of science and technology, engineering and mathematics.

Prof. Mayaka also noted that there is need to establish a Centre of the Rusian language and Pre-University Training which can be done online so that students from the East Africa countries can have the opportunity of completing preparatory faculty program without going to Rusia.
