MMU staff, special needs students attend disability expo

Staff and special needs students from MMU joined Ongata Rongai Community at Orione Community Centre in Kandisi to participate in a disability exposition organized to sensitize community on the importance of inclusion and integration of people living with mental and physical challenges in the society.

The event that also marked the 4th anniversary of the Centre, highlighted steps taken by the Centre to in ensuring that people living with mental and physical challenges are integrated and educated to enable them to acquire skills and d knowledge that would enable them to live with dignity.

Speaking during the event, Orione Community Centre, Project Manager, Mr. Richard Magana urged participants to be champions of inclusion and also support the Centre’s initiatives by purchasing agricultural products produced from the Centre’s farm.

“Our dream as an institution is to see an inclusive society without discrimination. We want to work together with the community, especially children and families to break down the barriers, open doors and realize an inclusive society for all”

Some of the students living with mental disabilities have been rehabilitated and employed by the Orione Centre

 
MMU Special Needs Secretary Ms. Patricia Mativo lauded the Centre’s dedication to be self-reliance and to champion inclusion of the disabled saying that her team will propose adoption of some the measures for the benefit of students living with disability at MMU.

“The centre is truly remarkable. We have learnt so much and look forward to when some of the strategies can be implements in our own community at MMU,” said Ms. Mativo.

The Orione Community Centre is a day care centre that uses different methods of therapy to enable children with disability learn skills necessary for living.
