Residents of Nairobi face multiple transport challenges that disrupt daily movement and affect safety ,comfort and efficiency .Traffic congestion is common during peak hours as the number of vehicles exceed road capacity, slowing movements for motorists ,pedestrians and public service vehicles . Matatus and buses are often overcrowded with passengers with passengers forced to squeeze inside or board already full vehicles while conductors aggressively call for more commuters. Many roads are poorly maintained with potholes ,muddy sections and narrow pavements making movement risky especially pedestrians . Additionally the lack of designated stops ,poor lighting at stages and excessive noise from hooking and loud music further worsen commuting conditions. Rising fares and limited transport options place additional financial and time burdens on residents highlighting the urgent need for better planning infrastructure and regulation in the area.

In many neighborhoods, heaps of uncollected garbage line the streets, drainage channels are clogged with plastic waste, and open dumping has become a common practice. These poor sanitary conditions have created an unhealthy environment for residents, leading to foul smells, water contamination, and increased risk of disease outbreaks. Without urgent intervention and improved waste disposal measures, sanitation challenges in Rongai may continue to worsen, affecting both public health and the overall quality of life.

The images capture overflowing garbage, blocked drainage, open waste burning, scattered market waste, and poorly maintained sanitation facilities, showing how these conditions affect the environment and daily life.
The issue matters because uncollected waste and stagnant water increase the risk of disease, air pollution, and unsafe living conditions, especially for children and vulnerable residents. During the shooting, I observed that garbage points were overwhelmed, drains were clogged with plastic, and some residents burned trash near homes.
Overall, the project highlights the urgent need for better waste management and collective responsibility to protect public health in Ongata Rongai.
