Nairobi, Kenya – May 15, 2025 — In a landmark move to deepen collaboration in training, teaching, research, and consultancy, Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) and the Morendat Institute of Oil & Gas National Polytechnic (MIOG-NP) have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the two state institutions work closely to harness their shared vision of innovation and capacity building in Kenya’s energy and technology sectors.The MoU signing ceremony, held at MIOG’s Nairobi Campus, was graced by top leadership from both institutions and marks a pivotal step in bridging the gap between academia and industry.
MIOG Director Dr. Nancy Kosgei welcomed the MMU delegation and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to leveraging the partnership for national development. “Together, we can create sustainable solutions and equip professionals with the right mix of knowledge and experience. Our focus is to provide hands-on, industry-aligned training that aligns with the needs of the energy sector and beyond,” she noted. Speaking during the event, Dr. Albert Kochei, Chairman of the MMU Council emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership. “This MoU is more than just a formal agreement; it is a bold step towards building a strong ecosystem that integrates academic excellence with practical industry experience,” he said.
The collaboration is timely and strategic, given that both institutions are state corporations, making their partnership both seamless and complementary. While MMU brings robust academic and research capacity, MIOG is well-positioned with strong technical and consultancy expertise in the fuel and gas industry, making the partnership mutually benefitcial. The agreement outlines several key areas of collaboration, including:
- Joint curriculum development and training
- Shared use of specialized infrastructure and training equipment
- Collaborative research projects addressing industry challenges
- Expansion of consultancy services to new sectors through joint ventures
On his part Prof Geoffrey Rurimo, the Acting Vice Chanachlor stated that“We look forward to not only working together on engineering programmes but also expanding this partnership to include our faculties of Science and Business, where we see great potential for innovation and sector-specific training and consultancy”.Prof Rurimo added that the two institutions have good programmes which intersect and are complimentary giving a rich variety for students.

After the signing ceremony the MMU team was taken on a guided tour of MIOG’s Nairobi campus where they witnessed the impressive training infrastructure and facilities available. The institutions agreed to continue engagement to oversee the rollout of the MoU action points.
