MMU VC Prof. Maranga commends students for patience during prolonged lecturers’ strike

Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rosebella Maranga, has thanked the university students for their exceptional patience, maturity and professionalism throughout the prolonged lecturers’ strike that disrupted learning in universities across the country.

In a message to the student community, Prof. Maranga praised the restraint shown by students led by their leaders at a time the university was also experiencing an internal strike by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) MMU Chapter, which persisted beyond the end of the national industrial action.

Prof. Maranga noted that students, through their leaders, chose “dialogue and understanding over agitation,” a stance she said reflected the true spirit of the MMU community.

“Your calm cooperation, especially as management engaged in internal consultations with UASU MMU Chapter, is deeply appreciated,” she said.

The internal strike was officially brought to an end on Monday 17th November 2025, after the university administration and UASU MMU Chapter signed a return-to-work agreement. Academic activities resumed on Tuesday, 18th November 2025, following weeks of halted learning.

The Vice Chancellor reiterated the university’s commitment to resolving issues affecting both staff and students, assuring that management will continue strengthening internal systems and improving learning conditions to avoid future disruptions.

“We remain dedicated to addressing pertinent issues affecting our staff and students to ensure that learning continues uninterrupted,” she said.

Prof. Maranga urged students to return to class with renewed focus and discipline to recover lost academic time. She affirmed that lecturers were ready to support the adjustment of the academic calendar to ensure no student is disadvantaged.
