Think beyond academics, MMU engineering students urged

Multimedia University of Kenya Engineering Students Association (MUKESA) held an insightful mentorship session aimed at equipping engineering students with practical guidance on career growth and professional development.Power Generation Manager at KenGen and 1st Vice President of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), Eng. Harrison Keter who was the session’s guest speaker, challenged students to look beyond academic excellence and embrace intentional personal and professional growth.

He emphasized that success in engineering is not solely defined by intelligence, but by clarity, mindset, and the willingness to learn.

“Every accomplished engineer once sat where you are now, curious, uncertain, ambitious, and full of potential,” he said. “The difference between those who merely graduate and those who truly excel is guidance, mindset and intentional growth.” Eng. Keter added.

Eng. Keter further underscored the importance of building personal capacity, urging students to invest in areas that cannot be taken away from them, such as skills, knowledge, mindset, character and work ethic.

He noted that while material possessions may be lost, personal development remains a lasting asset.

Representing the university’s Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation, Prof. Livingstone Ngoo, commended the students for organizing the mentorship session, noting that such initiatives are key in preparing them for the evolving engineering landscape.

He urged students to embrace the rise of artificial intelligence responsibly, emphasizing the importance of knowing when to rely on AI and when to apply human intellect.

“AI is a powerful tool, embrace it, but do not forget to apply your natural intelligence. Whenever you use AI, ensure it is used appropriately,” Prof. Ngoo said.

Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology Prof. Abel Mayaka, underscored the timeliness of the session, noting that it comes at a critical moment when many students are preparing for industrial attachment.

He encouraged them to take full advantage of the insights shared, emphasizing that such platforms provide practical knowledge that complements classroom learning and enhances their readiness for the industry.

Vilcom Networks Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agness Limo challenged students not to limit themselves strictly to their field of study.

“I urge you not to limit yourselves, learn other skills and explore additional courses and competencies. Adaptability and continuous learning are key in today’s dynamic job market,” she said.
