Road to financial sustainability as management holds inaugural board meeting of MMU Enterprises & Services Ltd

Multimedia University of Kenya has officially embarked on a new chapter aimed at strengthening its financial sustainability following inaugural board meeting of MMU Enterprises & Services Ltd (MMUES).

Speaking during the meeting held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the university, MMU Chairman of Council and Director of MMUES Dr. Albert Kochei described the establishment of the entity as a transformative milestone for the institution.

“It is not just the formation of another corporate entity, it is the beginning of a transformative journey for Multimedia University of Kenya and a bold step toward financial sustainability, innovation, and institutional excellence,” he said.

Dr. Kochei noted that MMUES has been established to unlock and commercialize the university’s vast intellectual capital, infrastructure, and human resource capacity, which he said has remained largely underutilized.

Drawing comparisons from successful models such as JKUAT Enterprises Limited and University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited, he emphasized that with proper management and strategic focus, universities can evolve into powerful commercial hubs serving government, industry, and society.

He outlined an ambitious vision to position MMUES as the most preferred government-owned commercial entity in Kenya and beyond, anchored on professionalism, innovation, and impact.

To achieve this, Dr. Kochei said that professionalizing operations to ensure efficiency and accountability, leveraging MMU’s niche strengths in communication, engineering, and digital innovation, and aggressively positioning the entity for government partnerships in training, consultancy, research, and technology solutions, will be the key pillars guiding the entity.

“The scope of our work is extensive, from hotel and conference services to consultancy, research, and printing. Bringing these under one structured framework will enhance quality and significantly increase revenue generation,” he added.

MMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Rosebella Maranga termed the inaugural meeting as historic, expressing optimism that the new entity will help secure the university’s financial future.

“Today, I must say I’m very happy because we have been looking forward to this day. We have made our first steps towards the establishment of MMUES and I’m very happy because of that,” she said.

Prof. Maranga noted that the university will consolidate its income-generating activities under MMUES to improve efficiency and business management.

“This meeting is very historic because it gives us an opportunity for business and as a university, we have hope now that we can be able to sustain our livelihood here because of MMUES,” she added.

She also revealed that the university will initially deploy some of its staff to support the establishment of the entity before it transitions into a fully independent commercial operation.

Also speaking at the meeting as a key strategic partner, Kenya Bankers Association Chief Finance Officer Mr. Kennedy Mutisya welcomed the initiative, terming it a significant step toward building a viable enterprise to support the university.

“We have been able to kick off our inaugural meeting to start off the journey for MMUES as it strives to realize its mandate of supporting and creating a viable enterprise for the university,” he said.

Mr. Mutisya, who was accompanied by Mr. Martin Kaburiah from JKUAT Enterprises Limited, further expressed readiness to support the university in growing the enterprise and ensuring it achieves its objectives.

The establishment of MMU Enterprises & Services Ltd comes at a time when universities are increasingly seeking innovative revenue streams amid declining traditional funding, with MMU positioning itself to harness its strengths for financial sustainability.

Also present was Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Finance and Planning Prof. Geoffrey Kihara, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation Prof. Livingstone Ngoo and Legal Officer Mr. Wilson Kagwe.
