HεrMαth: MMU alumni-led initiative supports women in mathematics through mentorship

An alumni-led initiative at Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) is creating a new platform to support and empower women pursuing mathematics through mentorship, networking and shared experiences.

Dubbed HεrMαth, the initiative was founded by postgraduate students Carolyne Wanjohi and Vivian Gachie, with the aim of building a community where women in mathematics can grow academically and professionally.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, the founders convened an inaugural meeting at the university’s Conference Hall, bringing together students, lecturers and alumni for an interactive session themed “You Belong Here.”

The event featured a panel discussion comprising industry professionals including Miano Lynn, a Risk Management Consultant, Mumbi Kariuki, a Data Analyst, Kendi Mwenda, a Senior IT Auditor and Data Analyst, and Sharon Mbeneka, an IT Support Specialist.

The panelists shared their academic journeys, career experiences and practical insights on navigating transition from university to workplace.

Key discussions focused on bridging the gap between academic training and industry expectations, building a strong personal brand, understanding workplace dynamics and preparing effectively for the job market.

Speaking during the event, co-founder Carolyne Wanjohi said the initiative seeks to create a safe and inclusive space for women in mathematics.

“HεrMαth is about ensuring that women feel seen, supported and empowered to pursue their ambitions in mathematics and related fields,” she said.

Her co-founder Vivian Gachie echoed the sentiment, noting that the initiative is driven by the desire to provide support systems they did not have during their own academic journeys.

“We are committed to ensuring that every HεrMαth activity remains grounded in our core pillars of support, empowerment and community,” she said.

Also present was Dr. Joy Mutegi from the Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics, who underscored the importance of complementing academic excellence with strong soft skills to enhance career readiness.

Director of Alumni and International Student Services, Dr. Barbara Nthoki, lauded the students for the initiative, stating the university’s commitment to supporting alumni-driven programmes.

She also revealed plans to launch the MMU Alumni Association, which will provide a structured platform for strengthening alumni engagement and supporting similar initiatives.
