MMU Hosts Mercer University Research Delegation on Lead Pollution Detection and Monitoring

Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU), through its Department of Chemistry, hosted professors and students from Mercer University for an academic seminar themed “Frontiers in Lead (Pb) Detection,” aimed at strengthening efforts to minimize human exposure to lead in consumer products and drinking water.

Prof. Adam Kiefer (Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry, Mercer University) alongside his research team and a group of 19 students, was welcomed by Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Iyaya Wanjala.

Speaking while welcoming the visiting research delegation during a courtesy call to her office, MMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Rosebella Maranga said the university is delighted to host and support the initiative aimed at addressing lead pollution through research, engagement and knowledge-sharing.

“The initiative is timely and significant, especially in strengthening environmental awareness and advancing practical solutions to pollution challenges,” Prof. Maranga added.

She further highlighted the importance of engaging students and young people in such discussions, noting that continuous exposure to knowledge and dialogue equips them to become future problem-solvers.

Prof. Maranga commended Dr. Njogu, Chairman of Department (Department of Chemistry), and his dedicated team for facilitating the engagement with the visiting research delegation, noting that the effort is key to advancing academic and international collaboration.

The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed MMU’s commitment to supporting partnerships, research and initiatives that promote sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.

Prof. Adam Kiefer expressed gratitude to MMU for hosting them, noting that they have been working extensively on lead in consumer products with a focus on reducing childhood exposure. He added that they have collaborated with chemists to develop best practices for measuring lead in paint and other consumer products.

Prof. Adam Kiefer further noted keen interest in engaging with the MMU community and said the visit aims to explore potential areas of collaboration in research and training.

Prof. Iyaya Wanjala conveyed appreciation to the visiting research delegation and reiterated that such platforms are integral to students’ academic growth, underscoring that the interaction between both teams will strengthen knowledge exchange between MMU students and the visiting team.
