Mobility Solutions for Africa: MMU to host prestigious AfroSafe 2027 Conference

Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) will host the 2027 AfroSafe Conference, a major continental platform focused on road safety, sustainable mobility, innovation and technology.

Speaking at University of Zambia in Lusaka while attending the 2026 AfroSAFE Conference, MMU Director of Research and Innovation, Dr. David Wekesa revealed that the conference is scheduled to take place from May 12 to 15, 2027, at the university.

Dr. Wekesa said MMU was officially invited as local host institution for the 2027 edition to join preliminary planning engagements with the European Union Committee in preparations for the event.

“I am pleased to share that through the effort of Dr. Gladys Nyachieo, MMU will host the next AfroSAFE Conference from 12th to 15th May 2027. MMU was invited as the hosting institution to kick off preparations with the European Union Committee,” said Dr. Wekesa.

The AfroSafe Conference brings together researchers, policymakers, road safety advocates, public authorities, innovators, and development partners from across Africa and beyond to discuss solutions aimed at reducing road fatalities and promoting sustainable mobility.

The 2027 conference will be held under the theme New Mobility Solutions for Africa – Journey to Zero Road Fatality, focusing on leveraging emerging technologies and innovative approaches to create safer transport systems and sustainable communities.

Dr. Wekesa said that the conference is being organized through a partnership between MMU and EDISE Mobility vzw, a Belgian non-profit organization dedicated to improving road safety, environmental sustainability, mobility, and social integration.

He also outlined roadmap leading to the conference with calls for paper submissions, innovation exhibitions, special interest sessions, and hackathon participation scheduled to commence in August 2026.

Key thematic areas include road safety and vulnerable road users, green transition and electro-mobility, artificial intelligence and digitalization for safer environments, and energy systems for sustainable mobility.

Accepted submissions will be announced in November 2026, followed by a series of pre-conference webinars running through March 2027 ahead of the main event in May.
