Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) and Huawei Technology are seeking to deepen their collaborations in areas of training, innovation, and development of ICT infrastructure.
While MMU and Huawei have a working collaboration that started in 2018, the two institutions are seeking to broaden their partnership in strategic areas that include; setting up a state-of-the-art innovation incubation centre, developing an e-learning infrastructure, developing and conducting ICT Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes.

Speaking at the university during a meeting with the Huawei Technology team led by Deputy Director – Government and Public Affairs Kenneth Matiba, MMU Chairman of Council Dr. Albert Kochei said that the university is looking to explore more strategic areas of collaboration with Huawei Technology not only for enhancing its partnerships but also as a way of giving more value to students and community.
“We want to deepen our relationship and explore new strategic areas of collaboration with Huawei Technology. We believe this can allow us to give more exposure and value to our students,” said Dr. Kochei adding that setting up an innovation incubation centre would be such a strategic area of collaboration.

MMU Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Rosebella Maranga echoed the same sentiments saying that MMU would greatly gain from an incubation centre and e-learning infrastructure that would enable students to nurture their innovations to commercialization, and also enhance effective teaching.
“One of our priority areas is to have a better e-learning system that our lecturers can use for effective online delivery of course content,” said Prof. Maranga adding that this can be supported by conducting Training of Trainers (ToT) programs for lecturers on the e-learning system.
On his part, Mr. Matiba welcomed the move, saying that MMU has been one of their valuable partners in training and technology skills transfer. “MMU is one of our top universities in terms of partnerships. When we have attachment, internship, and training opportunities, MMU is one of the universities in the country that has always benefited,” said Matiba.

Mr. Matiba who was accompanied by Carol Qu – IT Manager, Methushael Jossy – IT Engineer, Martin Kinyua – Senior IP Product Engineer and Sphia Musa – IT Solutions Architect, said that Huawei is ready to deepen its partnership with MMU and will work together to actualize the new strategic areas of collaboration.
Dean, Faculty of Computing and Information Technology Prof. Moses Odeo said that since 2019, the MMU-Huawei partnership has benefited over 300 MMU students; in training, attachments, internships, and employment, while several staff members have become certified strainers of various courses.
The meeting comes just a week after MMU emerged best university in Cyber Security in the 2024 WorldSkills Kenya National Competition.
