Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) has reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and improved service delivery during the 2026/2027 Performance Contract (PC) negotiations held with the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education.
The negotiations, undertaken as per 23rd cycle PC guidelines, were carried out together with representatives from the Ministry of Education, MMU Council and the university management to set performance targets that will guide the university’s operations during the 2026/2027 financial year.
The annual exercise is aimed at aligning institutional performance with national development priorities while promoting efficiency, prudent use of public resources and quality service delivery.
PC targets are identified from university Strategic Plan, Vision 2030 and Bottom up economic Agenda and this ensures inclusive approach in attainment of National development agenda.
Speaking during the exercise, MMU Chairman of Council Dr. Albert Kochei, described performance contracting as a strategic management tool that defines institutional goals, mutual obligations and expected outcomes.
He noted that the exercise provides an opportunity to identify areas for continuous improvement while ensuring the university remains focused on delivering quality education, impactful research and meaningful community service.
Dr. Kochei lauded the university’s consistent performance in previous evaluation cycles but noted that there is need for continuous improvement if the institution to always ranked among the country’s top performing universities.
Ag. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Livingstone Ngoo said that performance contracting should be viewed not merely as a compliance requirement but as an accountability mechanism that enables the university to respond effectively to the needs of its stakeholders and national priorities.
He affirmed MMU’s commitment to maintaining high standards of service delivery in teaching, research and community engagement through targets aligned with the university’s strategic objectives.
Chairperson of MMU Council Finance Committee, Beatrice Tanui, described the negotiations as an important exercise in strengthening institutional performance noting that performance contracting serves is a critical management tool for improving efficiency and service delivery.
Delegation-lead, Dr. Milton Kiura Njuki,from Ministry of Education –State department of Higher Education acknowledged strategic role universities play in advancing Kenya’s socio-economic transformation through research, innovation and development of skilled human capital.
He said that performance contracting is not intended as a supervisory exercise but as a framework for continuous institutional improvement and public accountability adding that the process is also meant to assure Kenyans that public institutions are delivering on their mandates while ensuring efficient utilization of public resources. He further thanked the University for Excellent Preparations for 2026/2027 PC negotiations and having all required information ready available.
The exercise, was concluded successively and the University was granted to proceed to the next level of PC vetting by the executive office and thereafter implementation through cascading across the University.
